I have helped many families moving to Omaha. Contact me if you have any questions about the Omaha area or need help buying a home.

If you are coming from most states, you will not be too thrilled with Nebraska’s tax burden. Property taxes are some of the highest in the nation.

Nebraska Taxes

State Income Tax

Sorry to burst your bubble. Nebraska DOES have a state income tax.

I created a specific Nebraska income tax page to answer some common questions.

Property Taxes

They are high (unless you are coming from a state with equally high property taxes).

Visit this page dedicated to Omaha area property taxes – why they are so high, what you get, and more.

Sales Tax

The sales tax rate in Omaha is 7%.

Sale tax rates vary from city to city. Here are rates for cities around Omaha.

Moving to a new city can be stressful!

Let me help. I specialize in helping people relocate to Omaha.

Restaurant Tax

If you’re heading out to eat, you should know about Omaha’s restaurant tax.

Restaurants, bars, movie theaters, arenas, etc. are subject to an extra 2.5% tax. That brings the total tax to 9.5% (2.5% restaurant tax + 7% Omaha sales tax).

The tax only applies to the City of Omaha, not other cities around Omaha. Lincoln and Grand Island are currently the only other cities in Nebraska with a restaurant tax.

Motor Vehicle Tax

Each year, you are responsible to pay a motor vehicle tax. The tax is based on a percentage of the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) when the vehicle was new. The percentage decreases as the vehicle ages.

The MSRP is set by the manufacturer and cannot be changed.

The current rates are below…

Up to $3,999$25.00
